Why are there different styles of lemans cars in the same race?

I was watching some footage of lemans racing and i noticed that some of the cars looked like F1 cars and others just looked like modified street cars. So it seemed like the Audi’s and Peugot’s had a big advantage on the more street looking cars like the Aston Martin and Ferrari F430. Just looking for some clarifications.

There has been a long tradition in sports car racing to run multiple classes at the same time. This allows for a larger variety of makes and teams, as well as fitting more racing into the alloted time.

In modern times, there are four classes racing – 2 prototype classes and 2 GT classes. Each class has it’s own set of rules that govern what can and cannot be run (minimum weight, engine size, allowable aerodynamic aids, if the car is based on a prodcution model, etc). The cars are in the same race, but they are only racing against cars in their own class (though it is always desirable to get the overall win, but that doesn’t count as anything extra in terms points/class championships).
