Anyone with knowledge of classic Beetles/ Porsches please help?
I was wondering if the rumours are true about how easy it is to fit a Beetle with a Porsche engine?
If it is true I’d love to find out more about these cars. What Porsche engine is commonly used- something like the 3.0 air-cooled, or do they use the really early 60s engines?
Any good places in the UK to get the work done/ see existing cars/ ask questions?
Do Beetles with this treatment still handle like tanks or can you modify them to match the new engine?
And what sort of fuel figures can you expect if you fit a Porsche engine (provided the car is driven sensibly).
Thanks!
Here is a quote from a poster on a VW web forum.
I had a 1971 VW Beetle. If you know anything about their engines, there isn’t an oil filter, but a plate with a magnet and some sticky junk to capture metalic and solid material. Anyway, I did end up cracking the short block. To make a short story long, the VW Dealers (1975-76) would swap engines all the time. The Porche shortblock bolts right in and the extra cost is minimal. So I did have the engine changed from a 1600cc VW 4 cylinder to a 2 liter Porche, change the carbuerator to a 2 bbl. Weber, High performance ignition, new low-flow headers, etc. Bottom line is that I never had a problem twisting the frame, breaking a motor mount, or flipping it over, Although I was clocked at 128 MPH on a highway, but that’s another story.
here are some other resources including a drag race clip of a VW leaving a mustang in the dust.
