How can I find a project car to restore?
I live in Iowa and am looking to find a 1968-1971 era corvette to restore. I’ve tried craigslist and auto trader classics. Could you give me a list of sites or ideas on how to find what I’m looking for?
So you’re looking to find a 1968-1971 era corvette to restore, huh? My recommendation would be to join a “group” through Yahoo that focuses on corvettes. Put out a question there… after all, these people have been where you want to be.
Another means of finding a project corvette is to check out car-part.com. This provides a list of salvage yards and parts they have for the vehicle… sometimes they have the entire vehicle.
Do your research. What are your abilities? I find that it is often the cheapest restoration if you buy one that doesn’t need the restoration. Here’s an example. Model T Ford… rotting, apart and missing pieces… $1200. new wood kit $1500, new upholstery $1500, engine work / assembly $2000, Tires and tubes $600, Time and aggravation (what’s it worth to you?) + misc. expenses. A running driving presentable Model T – $6000 ready to enjoy… so it is easier to fix up, detail, customize one already done.
Do you have tools (welder, mechanic’s tools, upholstery tools, etc.) Do you know how to work with fiberglass? if not, it may also be easier to buy one “done”, but it is something to keep in mind.
If you check out Hemmings motor news (hemmings.com), old cars weekly (oldcarsweekly.com) collector car trader online (collectorcartraderonline.com) they often have cars in all stages and prices… so you may have some luck there.
